Bikes in Bloom

Our signature project is the annual “Bikes in Bloom” along Highway #12. The bikes are a way to get traffic to slow down going through town. and discover the area at a slower pace. The  bikes have been placed strategically and during the summer months they overflow with colourful flowers. Having the bicycle theme inspires physical activity, trails, recycling – all while adding beauty to the town.

The Scarecrow Festival

The Brechin Scarecrow Festival made its debut in 2016 and was such a success that it became an annual event. “50 Shades of Hay” was a Fall Celebration, taking place the Saturday before the Thanksgiving weekend.  Something for everyone–games, a vendor’s market, hourly prize draws, music, demonstrations, food, a pumpkin patch and doggy parade made this event a must-attend. The public  voted for their favourite scarecrow, and even had an opportunity to enter a scarecrow in the contest. The whole community got involved in this fun-filled event held at the Brechin Ball Park. The 2018 Brechin Scarecrow Festival was so successful that it outgrew our ability as volunteers to maintain the health & safety and regulatory provisions required going forward in future years. The decision was made that 2018 would be the last year for the Brechin Scarecrow Festival.

Adopt a Highway

In 2016, we adopted Highway 12 from Wild Wing at the south end to Concession 5 at the north end. We perform a Community Cleanup twice per year and invite the community to come out and help with the event. This year the clean up takes place April 30, 10am. We meet at the Ramara Township Offices parking lot, provide gloves and construction vests and go from there. We’d love you to join us.

Other Projects and Initiatives

The Brechin and Beyond committee continues to fundraise for other projects. We have vendor’s tables at the Chamber’s Car Show in July where we sell 50/50 tickets. Last year’s winner took away over $1600. We laid a wreath at the Brechin Legion and assisted with their Poppy Campaign. The Christmas season found us at the LCBO ringing the bell for the Salvation Army Kettle Drive. This year we will also be at the Ramara’s Historical Society’s “YesterYear” extravaganza, as well as, the Brechin Ball Park, helping with Canada’s 150th celebrations.

Friendship Tulip Garden

Brechin and Beyond was the lucky recipient of one of 140, 70th Anniversary Dutch-Canadian Friendship Tulip Gardens! The tulip gardens were distributed across Canada in celebration of the first gift of 100,000 Dutch tulip bulbs sent to Canadians in 1945 as a symbol of appreciation for the role Canadian soldiers played in the liberation of the Netherlands and the hospitality provided to the Dutch Royal Family in Ottawa during WWII. With the help of Brechin Public School and Foley Catholic School, we planted the bulbs in the shape of the Canadian Flag. We are very proud to see them in bloom as anticipated. Thanks and appreciation goes to the Canadian Garden Council, Vesey’s Bulb’s, Canada Post, the National Capital Commission, Canadian Tulip Festival, Canadian Nursery Landscape Association, Garden Making Magazine, Chimpanzee, Baxter Travel Media, Enterprise Canada, and the Ontario Garden Tourism Coalition.
